Why an autonomous "Region" for Sicily?

Since 1130 until 1816, Sicily has been a sovereign and independent kingdom, with an its own Flag as well as its own tongue (the Sicilian, till today recognized by UNESCO as mother-tongue, living and currently spoken by sicilian people), and whose borders often did extend beyond the geographical area of the Island (in Norman and Swabian ages, Kingdom of Sicily covered the entire Southern Italy area  and a small part of Tunisia).

Kingdom of Sicily (including Malta for a long time) was one of the most relevant european entity in the center of the Mediterranean Sea, also well-known for its economic reliability and historical-naturalistic relevance (Sicily was a strategic destination of the european "Grand Tour").

In 1812, the Sicilian Parliament adopted the first liberal Italian Constitution, modeled on the English one, with which shared the ancient Norman origins

In 1816 Kingdom of Sicily's path ended: it was unified to Neaples Kingdom under the Bourbon's crown, into a new entity named "Kingdom of two Sicilies", whose capital was Neaples.

Thenceforth, Sicily appeared just as an internal part of other states (Kingdom of Two Sicilies, Kingdom of Italy) with no any genre of differentiation, despite to so numerous insurrections aimed to restore independence (or just to rivendicate conditions of life more fair than those ones which new governments imposed).

The most notable revolution occurred in Palermo in 12th january 1848 (the first revolution of the year 1848 in Europe), which was aimed to restore and renew the old Constitution of 1812 and, moreover, to restore the independence of the Kingdom of Sicily and its Parliament (which, effectively, came back in force until 1849).

Following accomplishment of process of political unification of Italy in 1860, the term "Sicily" survived just in a geographical meaning, with no more institutional or political implications.

Since later 1943, not long after the Allied "Husky" operation, (under construction)
